Investment and Development Projects in Tenerife

Port of Granadilla

The future port of Granadilla will be located 50 km from the capital and next to the south airport. This project has the clear goal of optimizing the connections that Tenerife has with abroad, as well as enhancing the possibility of the island and the province becoming inserted into the global networks of maritime transport. Two types of traffic are envisaged for this port. The first of these is the traffic that enters and departs from Tenerife for reasons of economy, functionality and proximity that will be the Port of Granadilla. The second, the traffic to be captured from the north-south movements owing to the strategic position of Tenerife with respect to these routes. The whole surface area of the new port will be more than 1,500,000 square meters.

The Santa Cruz connection wharf

The Port Authority, with the goal of integrating the port with the city, held an International Ideas Contest for the Planning of the Connection Wharf of the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the year 1997. Herzog & De Meuron team of architects won the Pritzker Prize 2001. Its project stresses the creation of a new public space for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a new square along with the construction of series of buildings of low height over the sea wall. In the year 2002, the Herzog & De Meuron team presented the construction projects for the new international cruiser terminal, the sea ferry station and the commercial zone of the connection wharf and the new services area of La Marina de Los Llanos.

Planning of Las Teresitas beach front

Located 7 km from the capital, Las Teresitas is the beach of Santa Cruz, where its population can bathe in winter and summer. The recognized French architect Dominique Perrault was the winner of an international contest of ideas for remodelling the zone. This project contemplates spaces for leisure, walking and sailing sports.

The southern train

The southern train is a long distance railway that will run between Santa Cruz and Playa de Las Américas. It will bring the job opportunities of the south together with the demand for employment of the island. The aim for the train is to cover the distance between the two sides of the island, some 85 kilometres, in no more than 45 minutes, at a maximum speed of 220 km/hour and with a calculated investment of 900 million euros. In a complementary fashion, studies are being undertaken for a second railway project, a train that will cross the north part of the island, between Santa Cruz and Los Realejos, in Valle de La Orotava.

A tramway to join Tenerife and La Laguna

After trams were installed in Tenerife in 1901, and following their disappearance in 1957, there is currently a plan for this cheap and comfortable form of public transport to return to the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and to link this town with La Laguna. It is stimated that, in March 2007, people from Tenerife will be able to travel the streets of their capital by tram. Trams are ideal for moving at slow speeds, between 20 and 40 kilometres an hour, and with a maximum speed of 70 Km/ h, which are suitable speeds in urban surroundings.

The new auditorium of Tenerife

The Auditorium of Tenerife was inaugurated on September 26, 2003. It has been designed by the prestigious Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, who also created the International Trade Fair and Congresses Centre of the capital of Tenerife. This building, which is at the forefront of design, will host all kinds of musical events and will become the headquarters of the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife. It will bring Tenerife into the top class opera circuit, similarly hosting shows from the world of dance, and the internationally known Canary Islands Music Festival. In addition, it will perform the role of an events room and as a center for conferences and conventions. This will make the building a driving force for cultural, social and economic exchanges. It is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on a plot of land of 23,030 square metres next to the sea. The principal chamber is designed for 1,688 people.
