The economy and the society of Tenerife have recorded strong rates of development in recent years, marked by the excellence of its tourist service and by the progressive consolidation of the Canary Islands Autonomic Government, which together with the central role taken by the Island Council, have played an important part in local decision.

According to the Hispalink forecast, the economy of the Canary Islands for the year 2004 will grow 2,3% versus a 2,8% of the spanisch economy.

The population of Tenerife, which counted 799,889 residents in 2003, underwent a large increase in the period 1999-2003, which were about 15,53% during the whole period. The population is concentrated in the coast areas of the Island (linked to the tourism sector) and, specially, in the nearby of the more important cities, which are Santa Cruz de Tenerife (220,022 inhabitants in 2003) and San Cristóbal de La Laguna (134,744 inhabitants in 2003), whose historic urban center (declared Cultural Historical Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999) houses the prestigious University of La Laguna.

Labor market: 36,264 people registered in the jobcenter and 274,785 registered contracts.
Education (in 2001): 25,030 students doing university courses and 137,439 students studying non-university courses, of which there are:
21,244 studying at infant and pre-school level
50,696 studying at primary and EGB education level
54,332 studying at secondary education level.

In the year 2003, the Island of Tenerife received a total of 4,898,003 tourists, of which 1,245,831 were nationals and 3,652,172 foreigners, representing in the last group a 37.13% of the total for the Canary Islands (9,836,785 foreign visitors). From the tourist that came to Tenerife 2,595,440 decided to stay at a hotel establishment (which means 52.01% from the total) and 2,302,563 in an extrahotel establishment (47.99% from the total). In general terms, the average expenses per person and day in the Canary Islands, reached 102.38 € in 2006, of which 64.69 € was expended in the departure place and the rest, 37.69 € in the destination.
